Clothing issued books, 1924-1934.

These records document the issuance of civilian clothing to inmates who were being discharged from the penitentiary. Information in first volume includes: prisoner name and number; types of garments chosen by the prisoner; clothing costs; total price for outfitting each prisoner; and monthly costs to the penitentiary to operate this program.

Legislation establishing a penal system in Kentucky was passed in 1798, and by 1800, the first prison west of the Allegheny Mountains, the Kentucky State Penitentiary, was completed on a one-acre tract of land in Frankfort.
